Like many others in the produce business, I planned to be in Berlin for Fruit Logistica this week. Unfortunately, the show’s timing changed to April.   Fortunately for me (and you, who get to share in the fun!), I already had plans to visit a friend in the area, and do some store checking.  

I like to say if it's not at The Berkeley Bowl, you can't get it because that place has EVERYTHING, and everything in abundance. The displays look like they'll topple over sometimes, but that's the fun of wandering this produce department. 

PACIFIC GROVE, CA—I had a little time to do some store checking before leaving California in Mid-September, so here's a look around Andronico's.

AUSTIN, TX — Whenever I’m in a funk and need inspiration, I store check.  

If we want to continue to grow fresh produce sales online, we have to have a better online presence than this.

TAMPA, FL—As a Texan, I'm an H-E-B kind of gal by heart, so that's always had me ambivalent toward Lakeland-based Publix Super Markets. But this store? It is fantastic. 

BERLIN—I often hear the rumor that Trader Joe’s and Aldi are the same company, and it’s a complicated thing to explain.

BERLIN—At first glance, this store didn't look like much. It's connected to the subway, on the ground floor with, honestly, a grungy-looking exterior. But the inside? The produce department? It was fantastic.

PARIS—Never mind my terrible French, this gourmet food hall is legit. Premium barely begins to describe the quality of everything here. I'd describe the merchandising as "Whimsical Farmers Market."
