Chilean fruit shipments drop 6% from 2022

Key players in the Export and Import Sectors Come Together to Face the Logistics Crisis Affecting Chile

During the January to August 2023 period, Chile exported 2.54 million tons of fruit, for a value of $5.97 billion FOB, (sales values are subject to adjustments by IVV1).

Compared to the same period in 2022, there is a decrease in exported volume of 6 percent, and an increase of 8.8 percent in value, as reported by Odepa.

Of this total in value, 73.8 percent corresponds to fresh fruit, 17.9 percent to processed fruit (juices, oils, preserves, frozen, dehydrated), and 8.2 percent to dried fruits (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, among others).

Fresh fruit reached sales of 2 million tons, equivalent to $4.41 billion FOB for the analysis period. These exports registered a decrease in volume of 7.7 percent, and in value an increase of 10.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

The main commodity exported in the analysis period in this group were cherries, registering a volume of 302,790 tons, equivalent to $1.820 billion FOB, which represents 41.3 percent of the total value of fresh fruit exports in the analysis period.

There was an increase of 6 percent in volume and 22 percent in value in shipments of this fruit, compared to the same period in 2022. The main destination is China (91 percent of the value of Chilean cherry exports were sent to that country).

Table grapes are next in importance, with 495,308 tons equivalent to $847.1 million FOB, registering a decrease in shipments of 18 percent in volume and 1.7 percent in value, compared to the same period of the previous year. The U.S. (47 percent) and China (12 percent) stand out as the main buyers in this period.

In third place are apples, with shipments of 419,000 tons equivalent to $430.4 million FOB, registering a decrease of 15.8 percent in volume and an increase of 2.4 percent in value, in relation to the same period of the previous year. The main destination country was the U.S. (concentrating 15.7 percent of the total value of apple shipments), followed by Colombia (concentrating 12.2 percent), Brazil (9.1 percent), Taiwan (7 percent). and Ecuador (6.6 percent).

And in fourth place are blueberries, with shipments of 72,242 tons and $317.6 million FOB, registering a decrease of 20 percent in volume and 10.5 percent in value compared to the same period of the previous year. The main destinations were the U.S. (49.6 percent) and the Netherlands (19.9 percent).
