Super Bowl avocado supplies look solid so far

avocados-2

With less than a month before the No.1 avocado consumption day of the year, a fuel shortage in Mexico could limit supplies.

While many media organizations are ramping up fears that there may be no guacamole at your Super Bowl party, Mexican producers say there’s no need to worry — yet.

In an official statement this week, APEAM, Mexico’s association of avocado producers and packers, said shipments from Michoacán have gone as scheduled.

The week of Jan. 14 should see more than 1,200 trucks per week filled with the green fruit travel from Michoacán to the U.S.

However, APEAM said if the diesel supply situation gets worse, it would limit shipments and could disrupt the market.

Assuming consumers can get their avocados for their Feb. 3 get-together, they should see this video from Retail Editor Pamela Riemenschneider on avoiding Avocado Hand injuries and other tips for proper ripening, preparation and selecting avocados.
