Broccoli and cauliflower markets will be a struggle the next week or two for various reasons, including a normal transition and abnormal weather. 

Colder areas of the Arizona/California desert region are experiencing light lettuce ice this morning after strong, cold winds swept through the area over the past two days.

A limited number of suppliers will begin harvesting iceberg and leaf lettuce crops in the Huron, California region this week.

Supply levels will plummet further than expected for the next two weeks. California will ship historically low volume, while production in Florida and Mexico (into South Texas) is coming to an end. The industry will be in an extreme demand-exceeds-supply situation for the next two weeks.

Rain is expected in all California growing regions starting Tuesday, March 21 through Wednesday, March 22.

On March 1, the Arizona/California desert growing region experienced another round of gusty winds followed by showers in the late afternoon. Lower temperatures and lettuce ice are forecast through the rest of this week.

Morning temperatures in the Arizona/California desert growing region ranged from the upper 20°s to 30°s, causing widespread lettuce ice. Harvesting and loading delays can be expected over the next few days with more ice in the forecast, but temperatures will increase throughout the weekend.
