As public health agencies last week called an end to the latest E. coli outbreaks linked to romaine lettuce from Salinas, the leafy greens community, government regulators and the entire produce industry continue efforts on multiple fronts to prevent future outbreaks.

The Dr. Oz Show featured a segment on the romaine lettuce recall December 16 that included information from the California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement.

In the aftermath of another E. coli outbreak associated with romaine from the Salinas, CA, area, Scott Horsfall, CEO of the California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA), said growers will learn and get better.

Consumers should look for labels with the words: Yuma, Phoenix, Southern Arizona, Northern Arizona, Northern California, Santa Maria, Southern California, Imperial Valley, Coachella and Central Valley. These are all safe to eat.

Today California leafy greens producers voted to strengthen mandatory food safety practices required on farms. The action is designed to protect consumers and prevent future foodborne illness outbreaks.

The LGMA will make an announcement with specifics about the new metrics once the new requirements are adopted (likely in the next four to six weeks).
