Now that avocado imports have resumed after a nearly week-long interruption, it may be time to look at the issue in a larger perspective. 

The Association of Avocado Exporting Producers and Packers of Mexico (APEAM), announced that after a few days of intense work in collaboration with Mexican and United States authorities, as well as with the government of Michoacán, an agreement was reached to immediately reinstate inspections and resume exports of Mexican avocados to the United States.

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced today that its avocado inspection program in Michoacan, Mexico has restarted, and avocado exports to the United States have resumed.

The Association of Avocado Exporting Producers and Packers of Mexico (APEAM) is actively working with the USDA-APHIS, Mexican Secretary of Agriculture (SADER) and other authorities to quickly address the situation in Mexico, strengthen safety protocols and guarantee continued compliance with the requirements of this important export program of Mexican avocados into the United States.

USDA and Mexican agriculture officials have been working together in Washington, D.C., and Mexico to lift the suspension of Mexican avocado exports to the U.S., which was imposed February 11 after an inspector received a threatening phone call.

According to the Economist’s ranking of levels of democracy across the world, it has recently demoted Mexico from “flawed democracy” to “hybrid regime,” right in between Honduras and El Salvador.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in a press conference Monday that the U.S. suspension of avocado shipments from Mexico has political or economic motivations.
