Houweling’s Group has officially launched its plastic-free CaliforniaGrown English Cucumbers in partnership with Apeel.

Apeel announced a partnership with Robinson Fresh, one of the largest fresh produce distributors in the world, to expand the availability of Apeel’s longer-lasting produce throughout the U.S.

GIC led the most current capital raise for Apeel Sciences, and with previous investment from Oprah Winfrey in 2019 and others, it brings the company’s valuation to over one billion dollars.

Following its rapid expansion over the last year, propelled by the expansion of avocado distribution and new produce categories with Kroger, and landing on European retail shelves at Edeka in Germany and Salling Group in Denmark, Apeel is now extending its plant-derived food-waste fighting solution beyond retail into the foodservice channel.

In their zeal to cut back on plastic use, some consumers have lost sight of the importance of the controlled atmosphere plastic on English cucumbers in extending shelf life. However, under a new agreement with greenhouse grower Houweling Group, Apeel Sciences promises the same shelf-life extension as plastic with its plant-based coating being used on cucumbers.

Apeel Sciences sent me a Happy New Year kit of caviar limes grown by Good Land Organics, Santa Barbara, CA, so I decided to do a little test.
