Northwest cherry season gets underway

YAKIMA, Wash., June 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The harvest of Northwest-grown sweet cherries has begun, which means a new crop of this superfruit will start appearing in produce sections nationwide.

Available fresh for a limited time, this juicy summertime treat offers ample health benefits inside and out. “Growers are calling the 2024 Northwest crop a perfectly average crop of excellent quality cherries,” said B.J. Thurlby, president of the Northwest Cherry Growers. “We are seeing cherries well spread throughout the tree canopy with fewer large clusters than we saw in 2023. Combined with the warm weather, volumes are ramping up. Historically, these types of fruit sets have led to big, beautiful cherries and excellent shelf quality.”

Northwest sweet cherries are more than a treat. Sweet cherries are a natural source of antioxidants, including anthocyanins that give the fruit a vibrant red hue and the anti-inflammatory benefit linked to cancer-fighting properties, cardiovascular health, pain reduction and more. Northwest-grown cherries are harvested by more than 2,500 growers across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Montana, who together make up over 70% of the fresh cherries found in stores from mid-June through early September.
