Retailers to Watch: Redner’s Markets

Industry observers are keeping an eye on several retailers: many are regional and rapidly expanding, while others are gaining momentum and have proven themselves exceptionally well positioned for growth.

In this Produce Blueprints series, we delve into eight grocery operators experts say are worth watching.

Redner’s Markets, Inc. BB #:104348 is a family- and employee-owned independent grocery retailer in the Mid-Atlantic region that celebrated its 50th year in business in 2020.

“While the original Redner’s banner is focused on value, with a heavy emphasis on consumer packaged goods, they’ve recently debuted a new banner, Fresh Market, which creates a more upscale shopping environment,” notes Emily Kohlhas, director of marketing at receiver and distributor John Vena, Inc. BB #:104221 in Philadelphia, PA.

“These Fresh Market stores are bright and airy, with large, farmstand-like produce departments opening up right as you walk into the store,” Kohlhas points out.

“They’re helping the chain stay relevant in geographies where incomes are growing and where expanding banners owned by international mega-businesses are putting pressure on the local retail environment.”

In 2022, a new Redner’s Fresh Market opening occurred in Lewes, DE, marking the fourth store for the format.

The Fresh Market banner offers a variety of upgrades such as fresh-pressed juice, more fresh-cut produce than traditional Redner’s Markets, a fruit and parfait station, on-tap kombucha, fresh guacamole and salsa, and more.

Some of these attributes will be integrated into Redner’s conventional stores as well.

All told, Redner’s has 44 grocery stores and 21 quick shops (under the Quick Stop and Quick Shoppe brands) throughout eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware.

The company was founded in 1970 and has been employee owned since 1975; its stores were IGA Food Stores franchises until 1979 when they converted to Redner’s Markets.

Throughout its history, the retailer has been known for innovation, being the first grocer in the area to include salad bars in stores, install scanners, implement a recycling program, add in-store pharmacies, and become employee owned.

Redner’s Markets received a boost in notoriety during the 2022 elections when Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dr. Oz mentioned shopping at “Wegners”—thought to be a combination of Wegmans and Redner’s—in a campaign video that went viral.
