USDA notifies trade community of proposed changes

organic supply chain rules

The Produce Marketing Association BB #:153708 sent out a member alert January 30 regarding new organic rules coming from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that are intended to “strengthen organic enforcement,” and “promote consumer confidence and traceability.”

The new rules will require more businesses along the supply chain, including wholesale distribution centers, to be certified organic, according to the notice.

“We will continue to closely monitor the process and will update you when the proposed rule is published, which is expected in early 2020,” PMA said in a statement. “At that time, the 60-day public comment period opens, and we will seek feedback to submit comments on behalf of our members.”

More information on the proposed rule change is available here.
