WATCH: Wegmans named Mango Retailer of the Year

ANAHEIM, CA—One of America’s best places to work, America’s favorite supermarket and the No. 1 in Corporate reputation also is one of the best places to shop for mangoes.

Mary Zink, produce category merchant for Rochester, NY-based Wegmans Food Markets BB #:104173 was named the 2019 Mango Retailer of the Year at a ceremony at the Mango Industry Reception held Oct. 18.

Zink accepted the award on behalf of the Wegmans team, crediting the National Mango Board BB #:189894 staff for bringing her up to speed after about nine months running the category.

“I learned about the fun fact that the mango is the No. 1 fruit in the world, which I found interesting, but it wasn’t the No. 1 fruit at Wegmans, so I was eager to see what we could accomplish,” she said.

Zink said traveling to the University of California-Davis to learn more about the ripening process that Wegmans instituted in 2017 helped give her a greater understanding of the importance of a better customer experience with ripe fruit.

Valda Coryat, director of marketing for the NMB credited Wegmans’ ripening program as well as in-house fresh-cut.

“Mango versatility really comes to life at Wegmans,” she said.
