Cherry plantations in Chile have expanded dramatically in the last two decades as export demand has risen, making it the nation’s top tree fruit.

The latest estimate from the Table Grape Committee of the Association of Fruit Exporters of Chile, the sixth of the season, projects exports to reach 64,518,065 boxes, reflecting a decrease of 13.2 percent compared to the previous season and a decrease of 4 percent in relation to the fifth estimate made less than a month ago.

The 2022 season for Chilean citrus was 32 percent lower than the previous season, making it the lowest in recent years.

Chile has shipped 58% more volume to the U.S. compared to the same time last year, and Chilean Cherry promotions have been in full swing since late December.

During 2022, Chilean fruit exports totaled 3.44 million tons with a value of $7.44 billion FOB, an increase of .6 percent in volume and decrease of .4 percent in value when compared to 2021.

According to the to the new estimate from the ASOEX Cherries Committee, fresh cherry exports will reach 80 million boxes, amounting to 400,000 tons.

The grape season in Peru and cherry season in Chile had their shipments interrupted due to demonstrations by different transport sectors of both countries in protest against the rise in fuel costs.

Chilean cherry exports to the U.S. are expected to repeat the dynamism of the previous season, while table grapes and blueberries are expected to decrease around 7 percent in volume.

This Chilean export season could be “very good for everyone” thanks to favorable weather, according to the Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile (Fedefruta).

According to ASOEX Cherries Committee’s most recent estimate for the 2022-2023 season, Chile will reach 446,769 tons in exports, reflecting a 25 percent increase compared to the previous season.
