Peru’s blueberry area grew by 11% in 2022

In 2022 Peru had 18,103 hectares of blueberries, which reflected an increase of 11.1 percent compared to the 16,290 hectares registered in 2021, according to the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) in Agraria.

The president of Inform@ccion, Fernando Cilloniz Benavides projected that by the end of this year, the blueberry areas in Peru would be close to 20,000 hectares.

He explained that, in 2022, the region with the largest area of blueberries was La Libertad, which reached 8,445 hectares, showing an increase of 2 percent compared to the 8,277 hectares the previous year. In addition, he highlighted that said region concentrated 46 percent of the total blueberry area in Peru.

Lambayeque follows with 4,931 hectares, registering a growth of 37 percent versus 3,608 hectares in 2021, participating with 27 percent of the total area of said fruit. Ica with 1,273 hectares (1,255 hectares in 2021); Lima with 1,231 hectares (1,236 hectares in 2021); Ancash with 1,185 hectares (1,012 hectares in 2021); Piura with 966 hectares (858 hectares in 2021); and Moquegua with 73 hectares (43 hectares in 2021).

Ventura is the main variety with 5,785 hectares in 2022 (5,291 hectares in 2021), followed by Biloxi with 4,870 hectares in 2022 (4,915 hectares in 2021). Benavides highlighted that both varieties concentrate 59 percent of the total area of blueberries that exist in Peru in 2022.

Other blueberry varieties in 2022 were: Rocío with 1,159 hectares (1,238 hectares in 2021); Emerald with 1,126 hectares (1,034 hectares in 2021); Sekoya Pop with 915 hectares (425 hectares in 2021); Atlas Blue with 676 hectares (426 hectares in 2021); Sekoya Beauty with 491 hectares (366 hectares in 2021); Magic with 324 hectares (216 hectares in 2021); Salvador with 316 hectares (120 hectares in 2021), other varieties with 2,441 hectares (2,261 hectares in 2021).
