Safeway Community Markets to Open in Berkeley, Los Altos and San Anselmo on March 1

Company Press Release

Safeway will proudly open four new stores in Berkeley, Los Altos and San Anselmo on March 1. Safeway Community Markets will keep alive the heritage of a local specialty market and provide customers with unique offerings. These stores will carry specialty items, including Mary’s Free Range Chicken, Mountain Fruit Jelly and Andronico’s “adult brownies,” to name a few. They will also offer services such as full-service catering, with a seasonal and fresh menu that is created from scratch in our kitchen by our trained chefs.

“We are excited to introduce Safeway Community Markets and welcome the employees to the Safeway team,” said Tom Schwilke, President of Safeway Northern California. “These stores will resonate well with the needs and wants of the community. Customers will find tons of local, fresh and organic options with everyday low prices.”

In celebration of the store openings, four local non-profit organizations will be presented with a $5,000 charitable contribution from The Safeway Foundation during the store opening festivities. The Safeway Foundation focuses on giving locally to help strengthen neighborhoods and change lives. The check presentation will take place in each store with representatives from Safeway and the recipient organizations in attendance. Press is invited to attend. See details below.

Highlights of the new Safeway Community Markets include:

Thousands of Local Items

Safeway is California’s largest local produce buyer. Our stores offer thousands of local items that are clearly marked “Local” for customers to easily identify. We partner with local produce growers, such as Cal-Organic Farms, and carry a broad selection across the entire store, including local favorites like Clover Stornetta Dairy Farms, Mary’s Free Range Chicken and Three Twins Ice Cream.

Thousands of Organic Offerings

Safeway offers more than 150 fresh organic produce items every day. We also have thousands of organic choices across the entire store, including O Organics™.

Certified Angus Beef

Our full-service butcher block features certified Angus beef cuts, a more premium cut of meat. It’s perfectly aged, guaranteed tender and has more marbling for juiciness and flavor. Our butchers are on hand to discuss custom cuts, cooking techniques and cut and prepare anything to order.

Full Service Deli

Safeway Community Markets offer in-store prepared entrees and salads from our skilled chefs. We also offer an extensive line of Boar’s Head premium deli meat and cheeses and fresh sushi. Our friendly deli staff will prepare made-to-order sandwiches using our freshly baked bread. We also have many ready-to-serve options ranging from hot or cold soup, green salads and “grab and go” meals. Our Berkeley Shattuck store will have an Acai bar.

Bulk Foods

The bulk foods section features an expanded assortment from grains to nuts to special treats. Buying from our bulk bins is a great way to keep up your healthy lifestyle and meet any dietary need. Whether it’s a cup of quinoa or a pound of almonds, you can buy only the amount you need for a whole week or just one recipe.

Beer, Wine & Liquor

The wine selection includes a variety of options and expanded import offerings, such as Kermit Lynch Côtes du Rhone, Dupeuble Beaujolais and Fontsainte Rosé, to name a few. The stores offer an assortment of liquor and an expanded Sake section, as well as craft and locally brewed beers like Trumer Pils, Bear Republic and Gordon Biersch. Shoppers who purchase any six bottles of wine and or liquor will save an additional 10% every day.
