Nogales: Overcoming traffic from road construction

While most in Nogales, AZ, agree the functioning of the Mariposa Port has improved greatly since it was revamped, there are still paralyzing traffic jams during the busiest months of the winter season.

This is being addressed with the reconfiguration of State Road 189, also known as Mariposa Road. In June 2018, the Arizona Transportation Board approved Phase II of the SR 189 modernization project as part of the 5-Year Plan, with Phase I and II starting concurrently in 2019.

According to the Nogales International, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $25 million grant toward construction of the proposed improvements to SR 189, including a southbound flyover.

Additional upgrades include a new bridge over Frank Reed road as well as other improvements to the 3.75-mile route connecting the Mariposa Port of Entry with Interstate 19.

Nogales Mayor John Doyle expressed confidence that these projects will help solve the SR 189 bottleneck.
