Goodlettsville, TN-based Dollar General BB #:172794 is piloting stores with self-checkout only as the company looks to optimize its low-labor small-format concepts.

The self-check-out-only stores are part of the Fast Track initiative, said COO Jeff Owen during the company’s FY 2022 Q1 earnings call on May 24.

“Self-checkout was available in more than 8,000 stores at the end of Q1 and we continue to be pleased with our results, including strong customer adoption rates,” he said.

That popularity led Dollar General to pilot stores with only self-checkouts.

“We plant to ultimately test this layout in about 200 stores throughout 2022,” he said.

The company also is moving forward with produce departments in stores, and expansion of cooler space for more refrigerated foods.

“We offered produce in more than 2,300 stores at the end of the first quarter, with plans to expand this offering to a total of more than 3,000 stores by the end of 2022,” Owen said.
