Peru’s 2021 blueberry exports increase 20% year-over-year

In 2021, worldwide blueberry exports reached $4.76 billion, reflecting an increase of 21 percent compared to the $3.94 billion registered in 2020, Peru’s former Minister of Production, Alfonso Velasquez Tuesta, told Agraria.

He said the largest blueberry supplier is Peru, with a 25 percent share of the 2021 total by value. Peru exported $1.201 billion of blueberries, reflecting a 20 percent increase compared to the $1.003 billion reached the previous year.

Peru is followed by Spain with $603 million (+39 percent) and a 13 percent share; the Netherlands with $565 million (+13 percent) and a 12 percent share; Chile with $564 million (+7 percent) and a 12 percent share; the U.S. with $306 million (+22 percent) and a 6 percent share; Morocco with a $246 million (+38 percent) and a 5 percent share, among others.

Peru again leaded in volume, with 24 percent of the total, followed by Chile with 13 percent, and Spain with 11 percent.

The main destinations for Peruvian blueberries in 2021 were the U.S. with purchases of $645 million (+21 percent) representing 54 percent of the total; the Netherlands with $280 million (+9 percent) representing 23 percent; Hong Kong with $102 million (+151 percent) representing 9 percent; the UK with $67 million (-3 percent) representing 6 percent; China with $63 million (-11 percent) representing 5 percent, among others.
