Convenience, not COVID driving online shopping

chicory 2022 online shopping

The pandemic might have helped push consumers to online grocery, but it’s convenience that’s keeping them, according to a survey of 1000 consumers by Chicory.

Seventy-two percent of consumers said they ordered groceries online in the past 90 days, according to the survey, and some of them are doing it more than once a week.

Frequency of online shopping kind of had an even split of 45% shopping more than once a week, 44% shopping once a week and 10% shopping once a month. That a bigger percentage than I guessed were shopping so frequently.

These numbers aren’t surprising considering the grocery shopping evolution over the past two years. If you had told me in December 2019 if people would be shopping for groceries online more than once a week, I wouldn’t believe it.

Chicory’s respondents also seem to have no qualms buying fresh produce online.

Sixteen percent of them said produce makes up the “most” of their online shopping cart, compared to about 33% pantry staples.

It behooves a retailer to court these shoppers, too, considering their spending habits. More than a third reported spending more than $100 per order, up almost 16% from 2021.

Walmart was far and away the most popular online grocery store, according to the survey, followed by Amazon and Instacart. The Bentonville, AR-based retailer also was more popular with shoppers ages 45-60.

Instacart was more popular among shoppers age 18-29.
