Weather, disease hits iceberg lettuce hardest during crop transition

Some growers are wrapping up in Salinas, CA, early because of bad weather and disease problems.

Markon Cooperative BB #:123315 reports its First Crop Premium Iceberg lettuce is in short supply, as growers move from Salinas to Huron, CA, which should have supplies throughout November before growers move to the desert growing regions for the winter.

“Expect sustained active/elevated markets through the harvesting transition to the Arizona/California desert region,” Markon said.

Green leaf and Romaine from the same growing regions have not been hit as hard, but Markon still projects elevated markets throughout November.

Markon released a video this fall explaining how the fall harvest transitions on the West Coast.

Markon inspectors travel with the seasons, monitoring product daily to ensure quality and food safety standards are met.
