Mexican tomato export value up 20% in 2020, a new record

Mexico saw an increase in tomato export value of 20.6 percent in 2020 over the previous year, totaling $2.6 billion and breaking its own record, as reported by Mexico News Daily.

While in terms of volume, tomatoes exports experienced a decrease of 1.6 percent at 1.82 tons in 2020.

In the first quarter of 2021, tomatoes exports reached a 5.1 percent growth valued at $830 million, with a 9.2 percent annual increase at 579,00 tons in volume.

Greenhouse tomatoes, which Mexico specializes in, has grown rapidly as an industry in North America over the last two decades.

Mexico’s greenhouse tomatoes acreage is greater than Canada and the U.S. combined and is responsible for 57 percent of the greenhouse vegetable sales in North America.
