According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Mexican banana exports totaled $141.1 million in the first half of 2020, reflecting a 1 percent year to year value increase, as reported by Opportimes.

During the first half of 2020, Mexican banana exports totaled 277,100 tons, a year to year volume reduction of 3.5 percent.

Bananas are a commodity tied to warm weather as they are grown in all tropical regions. On the list of the most important food crops in the world, bananas come in fourth, behind rice, wheat, and corn.

Mexico’s sanitary status has encouraged development of trade agreements and exports to new markets.

As a result of negotiations carried out by the Secretariat with the General Administration of Customs of the Republic of China, phytosanitary requirements have been concluded and established, as indicated in a newly established protocol.

In January, Mexico and China signed the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of fresh bananas, with the first shipment signaling the starting point. During the first quarter of this year, 58 tons of bananas originating from Chiapas and Tabasco were shipped.

According to data from the Ministry of the Economy, during the last decade, Mexican banana exports have increased from $77.2 million in 2009 to $300.9 million in 2019.
