Watermelons see steady summer market

Having passed the Independence Day holiday, watermelon buyers should find plenty of local supply options.

Supplies are still arriving from Mexico, but volume is increasing from Central California, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, the Carolinas and Texas.

Prices have been fairly steady this spring and summer.

We can observe that the Retail Price of Watermelon Red Flesh Seedless type for the Northwest USA from April to July remained between $2.30 and $6 per each, while the price per pound was between 20 and 50 cents, Wilson said.

Total Volume of Watermelon Seedless January-July 12th 2020

We can observe from the Graph the Total Seedless Watermelon volume so far for a total in 2020 of 2.7 Billion pounds. Florida represents 34 percent, Mexico with 26 percent and Georgia with 22 percent of the total volume. Total US accounts represent 2.061 billion pounds and Mexico 692 million pounds, Wilson said.

We can observe from the Total Seeded Watermelon volume so far for 2020 at 149.8 million pounds. Georgia accounts for 22 percent with 19 percent for Texas and with 7.5 percent for Mexico, Wilson said.
