According to the Association of Chilean Fruit Exporters {{BB #:156234}} (ASOEX), the U.S. and China are the top two destinations for Chilean table grapes.
Out of the total 602,000 tons, the U.S. and China received 274,887 tons and 112,657 tons, respectively, of table grapes shipped up until May 10, as reported by PortalPortuario, a Chilean news agency.
The U.S. established itself as the main destination, receiving 274,887 tons of table grapes, followed by the Far East with 163,928 tons, Europe with 97,407 tons, Latin America with 69,627 tons, Canada with 17,381 tons, and the Middle East with 11,138 tons. Table grape shipment to all markets have declined, except to Europe, which shows an increase of 1 percent.
China became the second biggest destination for Chilean table grapes so far with 112,657 tons, a 5.5 percent increase in comparison to the same period last season. Meanwhile, Taiwan received 5,051 tons with an increase of 31 percent and Thailand imported 1,649 tons with an increase of 35 percent. All this is despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.
The main European fruit and vegetable hub, the Netherlands, received shipments totaling 31,323 tons, an increase of 28 percent. Shipments to England and Russia amounted to 26,69 tons and 11,238 tons, respectively. With England showing an increase of 8 percent and Russia 3 percent.
This harvest’s totals had been smaller than the previous season’s due to a smaller number of hectares planted due to water shortage and high summer temperatures affecting the development of the fruit, as reported by ASOEX.
