Around Super Bowl Sunday, it feels like avocados are the only talked about fruit as consumption reaches beyond 100 million pounds on that day. But there’s another player in town who surpasses the avocado to take the crown in Mexico, the banana.

According to Mexican government statistics, in 2009 Mexico produced 2.2 million tons of bananas, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) reported to Expreso that Mexico still produces over 2 million tons of bananas each year.

In comparison, avocado production in Mexico was slightly under 1.9 million tons in 2019.

Luis Doporto Alejandre, who is a founding member of the companies of Golden Stone and Guacamolito, reported to Excelsior, a Mexican-based news outlet, that in a market that has been on the rise for the last 15 years, he estimates that exports for Mexican avocados will reach up to 2 million tons by 2030.

But bananas are still in the race, as Opportimes, a Mexican based news outlet, reports that statistics provided by the Secretary of Economy show that Mexican banana exports reached in a new record in 2018 where 569,875 tons were exported at a value of $259 million dollars, a 7.9% increase from the previous year.

In addition, this month, Sader stated that Mexican growers exported their first shipment of bananas to China, totaling 39 tons, according to Debate, a Mexican based news outlet.

Mexican bananas cultivated in 16 states, with Chiapas, Tabasco, and Veracruz producing 60% of the total, and exported to a total of 43 countries, including United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Russia, Italy, and New Zealand.
