Wisconsin public health officials have found E. coli in a previously unopened bag of romaine lettuce grown in Salinas, CA.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said health officials tested an unopened bag of “chopped Fresh Express brand Leafy Green Romaine Salad from Salinas, CA, that was collected from an ill person’s home.”

Additional testing is pending, officials said, to determine if the strain matches others implicated in ongoing multistate outbreaks.

Officials also said “While E. coli O157 was found in a bag of chopped Fresh Express brand romaine, not all ill people in Wisconsin included in this outbreak report eating Fresh Express brand romaine,” and “No single brand, product, or type of romaine lettuce has been reported by all ill individuals.”

To date, more than 100 people have been sickened by E. coli possibly linked to romaine lettuce in ongoing outbreak investigations.
