August 8, 2014

COMPANY CONTACT AND PHONE NUMBER: Bill Brindle (305) 247-5544

Brooks Tropicals, LLC of Homestead, FL is voluntarily issuing a limited recall of 401 boxes of fresh green skin avocados with a single Lot # 2610 because they may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. To our knowledge, no illnesses have been associated with this recall, but out of an abundance of caution a recall is being initiated.

Green-skinned avocados from the lot were distributed to a limited number of customers in Florida, New York, Illinois, Georgia, and New Jersey. All customers shipped Lot # 2610 have been notified and since product was packed over three weeks ago on July 15, no product should remain in the market since the product is greatly beyond its shelf life. However, Brooks Tropicals is voluntarily issuing this recall to ensure that we minimize even the slightest risk to public health. Brooks Tropicals is cooperating fully with the FDA in this matter.

The potential for contamination was discovered as the result of a routine FDA random lot sample taken on July 16, 2014, but positive analysis confirmed verbally by FDA was only received August 6. The fruit was packed on July 15 and has about a ten (10) day shelf life.

All existing product associated with this lot number is subject to the recall.

This is a voluntary precautionary recall. Again, to our knowledge, no known illnesses associated with this lot number have occurred.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain.

Any product remaining in the market channels with the Lot # 2610 should be disposed of immediately.

Brooks Tropicals is and remains committed to being a quality producer of Florida green-skinned avocados. Brooks Tropicals is currently reviewing all policies and procedures associated with our food safety program to minimize any future occurrence.
